Preparation

Your doctor will explain the procedure to you, and the areas he is going to target. You also get to know how long the process will take. In most cases, it’s 40 minutes to an hour. Your doctor will let you know of the risks and benefits as well. Since laser lipo is non-invasive, the discomfort after is minimal, and the risks are low. After the assessment, your doctor will let you know if you can undergo the procedure immediately.

To start the process, your doctor will mark the areas that need fat removal. They will cleanse the areas with a sterile antiseptic solution, to reduce infection risks.

After the preparation, the doctor will administer suitable anesthesia. Most laser lipo procedures utilise local anaesthesia. This way, you are alert and awake as the procedure goes on. It also shortens the recovery time.

If the laser lipo is to cover large areas, your doctor may consider using general anaesthesia.

In some cases, anaesthesia is unnecessary.

Your doctor will then apply a special type of gel to the fatty areas. This gel is specific for cosmetic treatments and it provides a good connection between the skin, probes and electrodes. To melt the fat, your doctor could use an ultrasound device called a transducer or paddle-like applicator. A transducer is specially calibrated to target only fat cells, ensuring that your organs and tissue surrounding problem areas are safe.

The Procedure

If your doctor uses paddle-like applicators, they will attach them to the areas with stubborn fat. The paddles discharge heat which moves through your skin to heat up the fat cells. This damages the fat cell’s membrane, and they start to die. The body then absorbs the dead cells.

Since it does not involve incisions, it relies wholly on fibre optic lasers. It not only melts the fat, but also encourages collagen production , which makes your skin firmer and taut.

Some doctors make tiny incisions to drain the fatty liquid from the ruptured fat cells. They could also use a tiny tube to suck the liquid fat into a container. Since they may hit some blood vessels in the process, the laser seals the vessels. There is no need for stitching as the laser takes care of the bruising, swelling, and bleeding.

For the best results, most doctors recommend repeat sessions. You may need to go in for 2-3 sessions per week and a total of 6-12 sessions. This may vary depending on the volume of fat or other considerations by your doctor.

Recovery

The best thing about laser lipo is that you can walk out after a procedure. Recovery time depends on the number of areas that your doctor treated. While some patients may return to work immediately after a treatment, some may need one or two days to recover.

Recovery does not necessarily mean lying in your bed all day. Resting immediately after the procedure may lead to subpar results. You should exercise as much as you can during this period. Exercise will stimulate your lymph nodes and increase glycerol and water release. This accelerates your weight loss.

You can expect soreness immediately after the procedure. This will go away after a while. The doctor may offer you compression bandages to aid in your healing. Compression bandages will keep blood clots at bay and prevent the movement of affected tissues. You need to observe a healthy diet during this period to maintain the results. Avoid foods high in saturated fats or sugar, as they cause inflammation. This will slow down your healing.

The risks

Although it is a relatively new procedure, numerous studies on laser lipo exist. Studies on about 200 patients over three years show that laser lipo is effective and low-risk. Apart from minor pain and bruising, the studies did not observe any significant complications. If your doctor makes small incisions, there is a slight risk of infection.
